Four Unique Roles of Your Midwife

You hear a lot about midwives these days, but what’s the big deal? What makes our care stand out in ways that are attracting birthing people in higher and higher numbers?

We are going to take a look at four amazing ways midwives show up for you during your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

1. We Know You: You are not a number. You are not a set of vitals. To your midwife, you are an entire person with needs, wants, stressors, history, and a family. We want to know all about you and all aspects of your health: body, mind and soul. By the end of care with us, we know your kids’ names, we have met your pets, we know your relationship with your partner and if you feel supported. We know what you’re stressed about, scared of, and what your biggest hopes and dreams are for your birth. All this comes into play when you’re having a baby, because birth & postpartum are impacted by so many variables. Knowing you helps us support you adequately and make sure you are thriving.
2. We Inform You: You are in the driver’s seat for your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. We are here to give you all the information and resources you need to be able to make informed decisions for all the choices that are before you. We have our opinions and we can make recommendations, but at the end of the day, this is your body, your baby, your birth. Not ours. We are here to talk things through, and then the decisions are yours. 
3. We Hold Space for You: When we are with you, we strive to be with you 100%, physically, mentally and emotionally in order to support what you need. At your appointments, this looks like attentive listening from your midwife. At your birth, it may look like us quietly sitting in the corner, observing your labor or it may look like hands on support with us encouraging you when you’re struggling. The goal is that we provide the space for you to be, say, and do whatever you need to do.
4. We Guard You: We specialize in and respect normal and low risk birth. We sit with a watchful eye to make sure your pregnancy, birth and postpartum are continuing in the normal, low risk zone. If they are not, we have the conversations needed and take the actions required to do whatever is in our power to keep you and your baby safe. We are  guardians of normal birth.
